Health By Heather Hirsch– The Pelvic Floor: Women and Physical Therapy!

Behind the scenes with Dr. Heather Hirsch

Dr. Missy was a guest on Dr. Heather Hirsch, MD’s podcast “Health By Heather Hirsch,” which aired September 7, 2018. Dr. Hirsch is passionate about uncovering and answering many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding women’s health issues. She is an American board certified internist who completed a women’s health fellowship at the Cleveland clinic.

In Dr. Hirsch’s sixth episode, she interviews our own Dr. Missy about the pelvic floor and how physical therapy can help! Here’s a brief intro in Dr. Hirsch’s words:

“In this fascinating episode, Melissa Gallow, DPT talks about women and their pelvic floor health. You will be blown away when you learn all the aspects of pelvic health– especially if you have had a baby (even 30+ years ago), or even if you have never had a baby and how these can affect your daily life.”

To listen to the full episode, you can go to Dr. Heather Hirsch, MD’s website here or go to your podcast app on your phone, and search “Health by Heather Hirsch,” and select the sixth episode!

How a PT Sees an Exercise: Deadlift

Muscles:

deadliftCore
; as a unit: transverse abdominus, obliques, quadratus lumborum, rectus abdominus, latissimus Dorsi
Grip/forearm
Hamstrings
Scapular retractors
; Rhomboids, mid trap, low trap, upper traps, Back; Lumbar andThoracic extensors/erector spinae
Glutes; maximus, Adductors,

Joints: knees, hips, pelvis, spine,

Function: Hamstring strength, glute strength, low back strength and endurance; Core strength: is a very important health component, in that it supports the body in almost every movement and position, and the deadlift is the key core strength building movement.

Who we use it with, and Why:

Athlete The synergy of the hamstrings, glutes, and low back to produce power and strength is an extremely important component to many sports. The dead lift, even at submaximal levels, is the perfect tool to add power, endurance and efficiency to an athlete

Everyday Athlete
: Adding endurance and strength to the glutes, hamstrings and low back.  If someone is going to tolerate any lifting from the ground the deadlift should be incorporated in their programming at some level. This is a highly functional exercise that translates into acts of daily living and the gym.

Rehab:
The deadlift is crucial for teaching and perfecting the “hip hinge” movement; we may start from an elevated surface or even laying down, but anyway you cut it…we have to be able to safely lift from the ground.
Things we want you to consider:

deadlift·         Form is EVERYTHING! This is an exercise that has huge benefits if done correctly, but has the potential to be harmful if done with poor from…mostly a rounded back.

·        Deadlifting light to moderate weight is very beneficial for developing strength and endurance to your hamstrings, glutes and low back.

·        Your upper back is a big player in the deadlift!  Your upper back should be locked in and active to help support your lower back during the lift.  The spine should stay perfectly neutral.

3 Simple Steps You Can Take to Better Understand Your Health Insurance

Let’s face it: insurance is confusing.

The companies we pay premiums to month after month in exchange for them to pay for our healthcare when and if we need it is becoming increasingly unreliable. They tote confusing terms such as coinsurance, copay, deductible, and max out-of-pocket. Add that to the fact that different services can have different benefit details under a single plan and it’s not surprising when people are astonished when I tell them how much financial responsibility they will have while receiving treatment.
